2022 Reading: Midyear Check-In

This year, I’ve been tracking my reading on a spreadsheet (in addition to logging my books read on StoryGraph). Thanks to the podcast Reading Glasses I have started paying attention to the books I actually enjoy reading (versus what I used to think I enjoyed reading). Shocker—there’s a pretty big difference there! I used to think I was happiest when I was reading literary fiction and only literary fiction, the stodgier and more serious the better.

I still love a good literary fiction novel, don’t get me wrong. But I’ve discovered that’s not the kind of book I actually enjoy reading all the time. My real reader wheelhouse—a list of common tropes, story devices, genres, and themes I almost always enjoy—looks very different. I can’t wait to share what I learn about my reading preferences at the end of the year. For now, here’s a list of the titles I’ve read so far as of July 22, 2022 as well as the wheelhouse items I’ve noticed emerging.
